  3. Code of Conduct / Personal Appearance Standards [Back to Top]

The Code of Conduct and the Personal Appearance Standards documents are to be read by both the student and their parent/legal guardian. It specifically details expected standards of behavior and appearance.

As part of our middle/high school personal appearance standards, all students are to wear designated Northpoint shirts (t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts or hooded sweatshirts). Other shirts may be worn in a layered fashion as long as a Northpoint shirt is one of those layers.

Northpoint shirts cannot be altered in any way i.e. cut, torn, shrunk, etc. They must be ordered so that they fit properly, following the guidelines stated in the Personal Appearance Standards.

Northpoint shirts may be purchased at www.northpoint.mylogoshop.com and should be ordered no later than Friday, July 23, 2010. All shirt orders will be handed out at the Orientation Meeting Monday, August 16, 2010.

(middle/high school: northpointclasses@comcast.net or 317-403-9119) or (elementary/intermediate: northpointclassesk6@gmail.com or 317-847-4326).

Students are expected to be in the classroom and in their seats at the designated class start time. Failure to be in their seats for the beginning of class is considered to be tardiness. If tardiness persists, a parent will be notified.

Planned absences, such as family vacations, need to be arranged in advance with the administrator and teachers.

  7. I-Pods/MP3 players/CD players and all Musical Devices [Back to Top]

These devices are not allowed at any time at Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate OR Middle School/High School. This includes classrooms, study halls, lunch and in the parking lot.

No headphones of any kind may be brought to school. If one of these devices or headphones are found the student will receive a demerit (middle school/high school only), and the device or headphone will be kept by the study hall monitor until it can be returned to the student’s parents.

  8. Game Boys and Other Electronic Gaming Devices [Back to Top]

No electronic devices of any kind are allowed at Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate.

    Northpoint Middle School/High School:
These games may be brought to school but can only be used during study hall and/or lunch. There can be no sharing of games and these games should be appropriate in nature i.e. no violence or scantily clad characters. Games can have no greater than an “E” rating.

If a student is found with an inappropriate game (as deemed by the study hall monitors or administrator) or if a student is sharing a game with another student, that student(s) will receive a demerit and will also lose the privilege of bringing electronic games for the remainder of the school year.

Games can only be played on dedicated game devices, not on I-Pods, I-Touch, I-Phones, or any other musical device.

  11. Building Restrictions [Back to Top]

    Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate: to be announced

Northpoint Middle/High School: to be announced

Students, who are not in a specific class, must remain in the designated Study Hall room. This includes time between classes, lunch, and when waiting to be picked up at the end of class.

Students are not to be lingering in hallway, restrooms, or parking lot.

  12. Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures [Back to Top]

    Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate: to be announced

Students should only be dropped off and picked up at the north door of the adult wing. Students must wait inside the study hall room for their parents; they may not wait in the parking lot or hall.

If a student needs to leave the building during his/her class hours he/she must sign out with the administrator. If the student is returning during the same day, they must sign back in.

Parents are required to pick up their students promptly at the end of their last class.

Study hall is only available from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Special arrangements can be made for the siblings of students who take Choir or A.P. Calculus and need to remain after 4:00 p.m.  All students are to be picked up by 4:05 p.m.  There is a ten minute grace period.   There will be a $5.00 charge for every five minute increment beyond 4:15 p.m.

    For students who drive:

    Students must use extreme caution.

Students need to be aware of people and cars in the parking lot and are to keep their speed under 5 miles per hour at all times on the Northpoint campus.

Students must not drive in a reckless or irresponsible manner. This includes but is not limited to speeding, “donuts”, driving while other students are sitting on the car, etc.

Students may not drive together during their class hours.

If students carpool to and from school they may ONLY drive together at the beginning and end of their scheduled classes. Students participating in a carpool must be listed on the Student Driver Permission Form of the student(s) who will be doing the driving. If a student wishes to leave campus during a study hall or lunch, but intends to return to school, they may not drive with another student.

Upon arrival, student must park car in designated area and immediately enter building. When student is ready to leave the building, he/she must leave the property. There is to be no lingering or horseplay in the parking lot.

  13. Discipline [Back to Top]

    Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate: to be announced

Northpoint is different from a traditional school as teachers, students and parents all work together to maximize the educational process. At all stages of the disciplinary process, parents will be kept informed and involved.

While the following disciplinary actions are guidelines, there may be exceptions based on certain offenses that merit individual evaluation and judgment by the Administrator and/or Board of Advisors. We reserve the right to determine certain disciplinary measures at our discretion. Please note that the following guidelines are not necessarily in chronological order.

    DEMERIT SYSTEM

A student who disobeys certain rules or standards set forth by Northpoint will receive a demerit. The demerit will be signed by a parent and returned to the Administrator. Three demerits will result in a detention. Demerits are given for disciplinary issues such as dress code violations, physical horseplay, failure to sign-in and sign-out when leaving during school hours or other general disobedience issues.

    STRIKE SYSTEM

“Strikes” will be given when a student disobeys a moral standard such as teasing or being unkind to another student or using profane language. Three strikes may result in expulsion.

    DETENTION

Detentions will be given after three demerits. One detention equals one strike. A student who receives a detention will be required to spend their next study hall in the library with the Administrator. If the student does not have study halls, they will have to stay one class period before or after class, which will be arranged with the parent.

If a student receives three detentions, the Administrator and/or Board of Advisors will determine if further action should be taken, including the possibility of expulsion.

    SUSPENSION

If Northpoint deems an issue worthy of a suspension, it reserves the right to make that judgment as necessary. The length of the suspension will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

    EXPULSION

There are certain standards of behavior, which if disobeyed, could result in immediate expulsion from Northpoint Homeschool Classes.

These behaviors include, but are not limited, to the following:

    • possession or use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs
    • possession of dangerous weapons
    • sexual activity
    • cheating (second offense)
    • physical harassment
    • profanity (verbal or written)
  14. Communication Policy [Back to Top]

It is our desire that all communication between parent/student and teacher/administration be done in a manner that reflects our Christian faith and values. Failure to do this has the potential to lead to an attitude of complaining and gossip.

It is therefore the policy at Northpoint that, should a concern arise regarding a teacher, the administration, a member of the board, another parent or student, the appropriate first step is to directly address that concern to the person(s) involved. This can be done in person (at a mutually agreed upon time), via e-mail, or by phone.

When a complaint or grievance regarding Northpoint teachers, administration, other parents or students, is overheard, we ask that all involved remember this Communication Policy and encourage those people to go directly to the persons(s) involved. This will also serve to avoid the temptation to gossip and spread unsubstantiated rumors around the Northpoint family.

We also strongly encourage anyone who is struggling with ill feelings toward another Northpoint family, teacher, administration, or a member of the Board of Advisors to refrain from discussing these issues or feelings with others. This is again to avoid gossip and the fostering of a critical attitude.

  15. Parental Participation [Back to Top]

There are always opportunities for parents to participate at Northpoint. The following are some ways that parents can be involved with the program on a volunteer basis:

    • Fundraising
    • Special Activities
    • Graduation Ceremony
    • Lunch Monitor Duty

Parents are welcome to observe classes; however, we do ask that parents notify the teachers in advance.

  16. Visitors [Back to Top]

Parents and family members may visit at any time during study hall or lunch.  Northpoint alumni are also welcome to visit, though they need to remain in study hall.  Any other visitors need to make arrangements in advance with the administrator.

  17. E-mail [Back to Top]

Our primary mode of communication is via e-mail. It is extremely important that you check your e-mail regularly to avoid missing important information.

  18. Grading Scale / Report Cards [Back to Top]

The following is the grading scale that will be used at Northpoint.

    A 94-100 (4.00) B- 84-86 (2.67) D+ 71-73 (1.33)
    A- 93-95 (3.67) C+ 81-83 (2.33) D 68-70 (1.00)
    B+ 90-92 (3.33) C 77-80 (2.00) D- 65-67 (0.67)
    B 87-89 (3.00) C- 74-76 (1.67) F 64 and below (0.00)

Students will receive a report card each quarter. The report card will have a percentage grade, letter grade, and any comments from the teacher. Report cards will be required to be signed by a parent and returned. At the end of the fourth quarter, report cards will be sent home permanently.

** There will be a $5.00 charge for replacing a lost report card.

Parents are responsible for maintaining these grades fsor their child’s permanent transcript. For further information on this topic, please visit the Indiana Department of Education Core 40 site.

  19. Textbooks [Back to Top]

Specific textbooks will be required for each class. These textbooks may be purchased through the individual teacher(s) or parents may purchase them directly. Textbooks for each individual class are detailed in the Curriculum section.

If a parent would like to purchase the textbook through a teacher, that teacher should be contacted directly for order information.

The websites listed below are good sources for purchasing new or used textbooks. Website suggestions may also be found on each individual class description on the curriculum page.

  20. Course “Drop” Policy [Back to Top]

Students will be given a two week period at the beginning of the school year (August 17, 2010 - August 31, 2010) to withdraw from a class without penalty. (PLEASE NOTE: Application Fee, Administrative Fee, Supply/Lab fees and First Quarter Tuition are non-refundable.

If a student withdraws from a class after that two week period, a drop fee of $80.00 will be charged. The drop fee for students who withdraw from a k-3 AM block class is $120. That amount will be paid directly to the teacher.

All parents who wish to drop a student’s class must present written notice at least one week in advance to both the teacher and the administrator.

A detailed course description is available for every class. This includes teacher biographies, textbook requirements, prerequisites, tuition fees, lab and/or supply fees and all other pertinent information. The purpose of this course description is to give the student and parent a clear understanding of the expectations and level of that course.

Before the school year begins, each teacher is given a class roster and will plan according to the number of students who have enrolled in that particular class. He or she will prepare and purchase materials based on that number. When a student drops out of the class, it creates a financial burden on both the teacher and the administrator.

Requests for an exception to this Course Drop Policy must be presented to the Administrator and/or the Board of Advisors.

  21. Student Advisory Board [Back to Top]

Northpoint has a Student Advisory Board which consists of students who plan and supervise the chapel, assist in planning school social activities, and other school-related functions. Students on this board will go through an application process and must show spiritual maturity and leadership abilities. (Middle School/High School only)

  22. Study Hall [Back to Top]

    Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate: to be announced

Those students who have a period between classes must be in study hall. There are two study halls available. The first is our “social” study hall (located in the gym) where students may talk and socialize. They may not get too loud or too boisterous, and there is a study hall monitor to oversee the students. If a student needs to use the restroom, he/she must obtain a pass from the study hall monitor. Students may also play games, including card games, as long as no betting (monetary or non-monetary) is involved. Eating is allowed in the social study hall.

The second study hall is in Room 278 and is considered the “quiet” study hall. This classroom is for those students who want to be able to study in a quiet environment. There is no talking or eating allowed in this study hall.

Students are allowed a maximum of two (2) study halls per day.  One (1) study hall is offered free of charge and the second additional study hall is $25.00/quarter.

  23. Snack Shop/Lunch [Back to Top]

    Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate: to be announced

Northpoint has a snack shop that carries many food items for purchase. These items include bottled water, soft drinks, miscellaneous snacks and lunch items. Those students who wish to purchase these snacks may pay in cash or may purchase a punch card ($5.00). This punch card is the same as cash and will not be replaced if it is lost.

There are also microwaves available if a student would like to bring something from home. If a student does bring a snack or lunch, they will also need to bring all paper products i.e. plate, bowl, plastic ware, etc.

Students who stay at Northpoint for lunch eat in the gym.

  24. Chapel [Back to Top]

Chapel takes place five times a year during an extended lunch period. There will be a special chapel schedule for that day. Each period will be five minutes shorter in order to accommodate the chapel. All students who remain at Northpoint during the lunch period will be required to attend. The chapel will consist of a time of worship music, student testimonies and/or special guest speakers.

  25. Inclement Weather [Back to Top]

In the event of inclement weather, please refer to our website at northpointclasses.com or local television stations. We will be listed as “Northpoint Homeschool Classes” which will include both elementary/intermediate and middle school/high school unless otherwise indicated.

  26. Class Pictures [Back to Top]

Pictures will be offered and available for purchase at the beginning of the year.

  27. Other Events and Opportunities [Back to Top]

Field trips, holiday parties, and other opportunities for fellowship will take place throughout the year.

  28. Board of Advisors [Back to Top]

    Northpoint Elementary/Intermediate: to be announced

The Board of Advisors is responsible for establishing the organizational mission at Northpoint, as well as ensuring that mission is carried out. The current Board includes the following members:
